EBUS
EBUS stands for Endobronchial ultrasound. TBNA stands for transbronchial needle aspiration.
The EBUS TBNA procedure allows doctors to see and take samples from the glands in the centre of the chest (mediastinum).
The flexible telescope called a bronchoscope is passed into the lungs via the mouth with the patient lying flat on their back. A small camera at the end of the bronchoscope enables direct vision into the air passages/airways (bronchi). The small ultrasound probe on the end of the camera allows visualisation of the glands that lie outside the airways sited in the mediastinum and facilitate the taking of samples safely and under direct vision.
